Address Reporting Requirement for All Foreign Nationals
Every foreign national must report his/her address to the Department of Homeland Security within 10 days of any move. Please review to see if you must complete the Form AR-11 on your own, or if you must report your address to Duke so that Duke can report on your behalf.

F-1 students and their families affected.

Five-Month Unbroken Absence from the U.S.
Absence from the U.S. of more than 5 months cancels, terminates, ends your F-1 status. You will need to start your F-1 status all over again. There are a few exceptions. Do not even consider being abroad more than 5 months without reviewing this information and making an appointment with an international student advisor to discuss your plans.

J-1, H-1B, O-1, R-1, TN, and some other nonimmigrant classes and their families affected.

30-day Absence from the U.S.
Absence from the U.S. of more than 30 days can cancel, terminate, end your J, H, O, etc. status. You will need to start your status all over again. There are a few exceptions. Do not even consider being abroad more than 30-days without reviewing this information and making an appointment with an international advisor to discuss your plans.

Incidental Employment for J-1 Visiting Professors & Research Scholars
If you hold a Duke-issued J visa document, the Form DS-2019, then your work is restricted to Duke. The International Office can authorize you to give lectures, consult, and so on at other locations. You must get permission in advance, before engaging in any outside employment.

I-House offers a wonderful range of services including daily orientations. We strongly encourage you to attend an orientation. You may already know a lot about the U.S., but the scholar orientations are customized to your questions and help you optimize your time at Duke.

Scheduling Appointments and Self-Service, International Office
Drop-offs and pick-ups do not require an appointment. We strongly recommend appointments for filing applications or discussing a visa problem. Your time is valuable; scheduling an appointment is an effective use of that time.
