What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. The International Office uses RSS feeds as a way to easily distribute a list of headlines, update notices, and content to the Duke international community.

With new integrated support for RSS in Internet Explorer 7, you can easily discover, subscribe to and read RSS feeds directly in the browser.

In Internet Explorer 7, you can read the feed directly in the browser, scan for important information and get a description of the content. You can also subscribe to a feed with a single click, a process that is very similar to adding a website Favorite.

How to subscribe to an RSS feed in Internet Explorer 7

  1. The site you're visiting must offer RSS feeds. Internet Explorer 7 will notify you of a site that offers RSS by illuminating (in red or orange) the RSS feed button on your toolbar.
  2. Click the red/orange "Feeds" button to see a list of articles that are offered via RSS and subscribe to them by clicking "Subscribe to this feed" in the upper part of the screen.
  3. You can see all the updated content on this site by looking in the Feeds section of your Favorites Center each time you open Internet Explorer 7.

How to subscribe to an RSS feed in Firefox

Foxfire uses a special type of bookmark that acts as a folder to contain the links in a feed. You can create a live bookmark by visiting a site with a feed, clicking on the live bookmark icon in the Status Bar, and selecting the feed format you wish to use.

How to subscribe to an RSS feed in Safari

  1. Go to the RSS view for the webpage you want to search. For example, go to www.nytimes.com and click the RSS icon at the right end of the address bar.
  2. Click the Add (+) button.
If there is more than one RSS view for a webpage, clicking the RSS icon produces a list of available RSS pages. Choose the one you want.
  3. Type a name for the bookmark. For example, "Latest NYT Articles."
Specify where you want to keep the bookmark. You can add it to the bookmarks bar, the Bookmarks menu, or to one of the collections of bookmarks such as News or Travel.
  4. Click Add.
  5. When you click the bookmark, Safari displays the latest articles.
